Discover our induction information to help you settle into University life.
Every year we welcome new students with a series of induction and orientation activities, designed to help you settle into a new city, make new friends, and prepare yourself for the start of term. Please read through the information on this page very carefully. To access your full induction please log into Canvas using your Newcastle University student login details. 1. Prepare your laptop with some free software
Newcastle University students can download Office365 free of charge. It is also a good idea to try to access all the components you will need for your studies here; we have an excellent IT Service Desk and they are happy to assist you at 0191 208 5999 or it.servicedesk@ncl.ac.uk.
2. Read about your programme induction
Each programme has a tailored induction timetable. This timetable will include activities such as your welcome talk from our Head of School, meeting your personal tutor and peer mentor, and opportunites to meet the rest of our vibrant student body. You can find the induction timetable for your degree in the drop down menus below.
2. Choose your optional modules
Some programmes offer students the opportunity to take some optional modules. You can find details of your modules, including optional modules, in the drop down menus below. If you wish to change your chosen modules, you can fill out this module change form to let us know which modules you would like to change. Undergraduate module changes for Semester 1 should be submitted by 12pm on 4th October 2024. If you have any questions, you can email elll@newcastle.ac.uk or come to reception.

Stage 1 - Q306: English Literature

Modules
Students on Q306: English Literature will all take the following compulsory modules:
- SEL1034: Beginnings (Semester 1)
- SEL1033: Doing Criticism (Semester 1)
- SEL1035: Revolutions (Semester 2)
- SEL1023: Transformations (Semester 2)
These modules are 20 credits each, which means that you will study 80 credits of compulsory modules. All students will take 120 credits each academic year. Students normally study 60 credits in semester 1 and 60 credits in semester 2, however you may study 50 credits in one semester and 70 in another.
This means that students on Q306: English Literature need to choose 40 credits of optional modules to study in their first year, with credits in both semesters 1 and 2.

Module Choices
Students on Q100: Linguistics will all take the following compulsory modules:
- SEL1008: The Nature of Language (Semester 1)
- SEL1027: Introduction to the Structure of Language 1: Phonetics, Phonology & Morphology (Semester 1)
- SEL1028: Introduction to the Structure of Language 2: Syntax, semantics and pragmatics (Semester 2)

These modules are 20 credits each, which means that you will study 80 credits of compulsory modules. All students will take 120 credits each academic year. All Q100: Linguistics students will choose a combination of language modules with their remaining credits. Level B or 'intermediate' courses require an A-Level or equivalent language skills.

Module Changes
You should have already chosen your modules for the upcoming academic year. If you wish to make any changes to your module selection, the window for module changes is currently open. You can submit this module change request form to see if your modules can be changed. The deadline for module changes is 12pm on 4th October.
Submitting a module change request form does not guarantee you a space on your requested module - we need to ensure that there is space on the module, you have any necessary pre-requisites and that you have followed the rules of your programme regulations before approving your request. Please see the module selection Canvas page for more guidance.
All module changes for Semester 1 should be requested by the end of teaching week 2. This includes students currently registered for HSS-dummy modules.

4. Check your Academic Timetable
Your academic timetable lists each of your scheduled teaching activities - it doesn't list your induction schedule (expand the relevant programme tab above to find your Induction timetable). It also doesn't list events organised by the Student's Union, Societies or Sports Teams so please do keep your eyes peeled for more fun activities on offer!
To view student timetables you need to be registered with the University and have your student ID and password. You can access your timetable in two ways. You can access your timetable using the Student Portal.
It is your responsibility to check your timetable for clashes and report any problems to the School Office. This is especially important when signing up for optional modules as not all modules offered to you will fit into your timetable with your compulsory modules. When it comes to picking modules you only need to check your lecture times. Lectures cannot be moved but seminars can be changed.
Your academic timetable for 2024/2025 should be available from Monday 19th August 2024. Once your timetable is published, check your timetable again for seminar clashes. If you notice any clashes please report it to the School Office so they can submit a seminar change request for you. You can only change a seminar if you have a clash with another module, you have a long standing medical appointment or work commitments. Timetables can only be changed during the first two teaching weeks of each semester.

5. Download your Reading Lists
Reading lists are available online, on the Library website, and issued per module. You do not need to buy anything prior to arrival or start studying just yet. We recommend that you purchase the essential list for your Semester 1 modules during your first few weeks with us.
If you are keen and want to get started now, you can access the Stage 1 Indicative reading list for our Semester 1 compulsory modules from our Undergraduate page. We recommend editions with introductions to help you make sense of the scholarly discussions around the text and notes which analyse difficult passages (Penguin and Oxford editions are strongly recommended where available). Kindle or digital editions with these features are acceptable.
Blackwell’s (conveniently located on the edge of Campus) is a great place to buy your books. Some of the benefits of buying your books through Blackwell’s are:

- They bundle book packages for some modules
- They buy and sell used books
- You can purchase online or in store
